From Tucson, take I-10 East to Exit 281. This is Highway 83, the
Sonoita Exit. Follow Hwy 83 South about 21 miles to Gardner Canyon road, FS 92.
FS 92 is 4 miles north of Sonoita. Turn right onto this dirt road and
drive 3/4 mile to a fork in the road. Turn right on FS 163, following
the sign to Kentucky Camp. Drive 2 miles, entering and exiting signed
private property. There will be a large trailhead with maps on the left.
Keep going down the main road to find numerous primitive camp sites. Look for folks with bikes.

Route Description: The route has two different loops: (1)Kentucky Camp/Gardner Canyon and the (2) Greaterville loop. Both of these area feature singletrack and forest roads. The historical background and the views of the area are the best part about this route. Make sure to enjoy both as you do this route.
1. Kentucky Camp Loop
Continue on FR163 from camping area, heading west toward the Santa Ritas. At the Kentucky Camp sign, go left through the gate as you start to descend into the historical Kentucky Camp. As you near KC, you will see some houses, continue on the trail between the houses and trees (staying to the left of the caretaker sign). Look of the AZ Trail sign the has an arrow right, then an arrow left. Take this singletrack as it winds to a gate. Go through the gate making sure to close it if nobody is behind you. Continue on singletrack through another gate until you reach a dirt two-track road that heads east/right. Take this road (4085) past some old machinery, always staying on the most-travelled road.
At the Y, take the Gardner direction, staying on 4085. You will pass an old mine shaft on your right and later a pond on your left, stay on the major road. Eventually you will reach the 4110 junction after descending, go right. Road closed sign on your left, continue on enjoying the views of the canyon below. At 4085/4086 junction, take 4085 left/south. Cross wash, take left at Garder Canyon 1 mile sign (4084). Stay on 4084 as it does a 180 degree turn and drops down left into a rocky road with campsites past the stream, continue on until you see a very prominent T where you hit a major road with a cattle guard on the right and a road closed sign ahead. Turn right/west here. Continue on this road past another cattle guard, always staying on the most-travelled dirt road. This road will drop down into a dead end (for cars at least), you will see two metal posts, go through them and across the stream. This dirt two-track will shrink into single track, drop a small, steep embankment into the creek and up, before dropping back across the creek and up the opposite side of the mountain. Follow up the switchbacks, climbing until you reach another major road with a sign Area Closed sign. Turn left on dirt road (5928 feet, highest point of race).
Continue on this road for about 2 miles before you reach an AZ Trail sign (big one, on the right side of the road) and a barbed wire fence.
Go through the fence, carefully looking to your left about 1 mile down the road for the start of the AZ Trail (a brown, slender sign) that will lead us back to Kentucky Camp. At AZ Trail, turn left, go 300 feet to creek, noting the AZ Trail sign on either side of the creek, follow the AZ Trail sign heading south/southwest. There is Y down further on this singletrack, just take the most prominent way (right) past the rock wall. Look for more AZ Trail signs as the trail contours the ride and eventually drops into a dirt two track, turn right here following the AZ Trail signs. When you reach another brown AZ Trail sign on your left, take it. You will pass a forest road that is perpendicular to the AZ Trail. Always staying on the AZ Trail, you will eventually drop into a creek, then go up through the gate, hit another forest road. Turn right on the forest road until you see some more single track about 200 feet away. Take this singletrack as it starts to veer away from the road and up a ridge. The singletrack will continue until you reach the intersection of the AZ Trail and 4085 (this is where you turned right before). Go straight on AZ Trail toward Kentucky Camp on the same track you did previously. Go past Kentucky Camp (toilets are available if you need them) and continue back up toward the gate at the top of the hill (FR163). Go through the gate, but this time turn left to go up (west) FR163.
2. Greaterville Loop

The date has been changed to March 9th from the previous date.
I’ll be there. Looking forward to it. Anyone planning on preriding it? I would be interested in joining.
Awesome, we will be there.
HI Chad,
Likely I’ll be there. Gives me a good ride to get prepared for and you are a great race host
Lee
Greetings Chad,
I would like to try this. If anyone is pre-riding? I might be interested.
Patrick
Well this is my bid for a day on the bike once again. Bad weather has put a damper on my plans the past two AES events. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this time around. Should be a great ride with some good company. See ya there!!
I’ll be there. Hopefully, I should have my Garmin Edge 305 fully figured out by then.
Cheers,
amber
Got a pre-ride in yesterday. It was 70 degrees out there in February! March is gonna be hot! Oh yeah, barring weather disasters or date changes I’ll be there.
Chad, you gonna make people call their shots?! Claiming you’re gonna do two laps and only doing one equals DNF? Let me be the first to lay down the gauntlet. I call two laps, and the eight ball in the corner pocket!
Mark,
That would be a DNF, correct.
Indeed, it was a little toasty yesterday. I am sure you saw some of our tracks that we added to the trail early yesterday out at KC on the AZT section. I look forward to riding with the Sierra Vista crew and drinking some well deserved beer.
I plan on being there. One lap is plenty!
Greg
I plan to be there.
Hey Chad, we met once up on Milagrosa. I was the guy with the broken pedal.
Congrats on your race. I still don’t know how anyone does that for that long. Amazing!
Too keep the mo going from my, eh hem, 4 laps, I’d like to get in on this ride as well. Do I need to sign up anywhere or just let you know? I will just be doing the short course.
Scott
Hi Chad,
Thanks for getting back to me quickly. I’m arriving in Tucson on Saturday March 8,2008 from Toronto….(so cold here and snowy!!)
I am going to come down to the race on Sunday. Would I be able to ride the course and not be in the race? Also, I’m looking for a full suspension bike to rent… can you suggest any place to rent?
You had mentioned that there will be demo’s to try….do you think I could use one of them?
Thanks….MJ
Hey Chad… still planning on being there, though I’ll be driving down that morning. I’m wimping out and only doing one lap. Still undecided if it will be the rigid SS or the geared squishy.
I’ll be at this one for sure. Can’t wait.
Hey Chad,
I am 90% sure that I will make it out for this one. Never rode the trail but have been wanting to for some time now. If anybody wants to go preride on the 1st or 2nd with a slow guy I am shooting to be down there.
This event looks like a blast and the trail/terrain is phenomenal. We are actually hosting an Adventure Race out here on the 8th and it should be fantastic!
I will be there. Shall we all do a sun dance to bring on the nice weather? It seems like every biking event this winter has been hit by rain!!
Date change again?! I just noticed after reading the post here about the rider from Canada showing up on Saturday for the race on Sunday, that the race is actually on Saturday? In the first post above you originally re-scheduled it for the 9th(Sunday), which is the date that I put on my calendar. When did it change? Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention. I’ll still be there, but a few of my buddies who thought the race was on Sunday probably won’t be able to make it now.
Last time I checked the race was scheduled for March 9th. Chad did someone crack your webmaster password and change the date? If so, then I won’t be making the event. Several of us from S.V. had been planning on participating with the assumption that it was on the 9th (Domingo). Maybe, I will just have to stop at KC on my way home from Tucson and do a Saturday night ride, anyone? If I am wrong (por favor) then put me down for 2 laps on the side pocket followed by the eight-ball in the corner pocket. Cheers
Errr….. I originally thought I scheduled it for the Saturday (so we could camp out after the race). Not sure why I had it on the Sunday. I am down with either date, Sunday or Saturday, just means we will have to drink before we ride if we do it on Sunday
Is there any problem with having it on (the originally posted date) the 9th, Sunday for people out there?
I’d prefer the 9th since that is what I have in my calender, otherwise I will have to miss yet another one of your races.
My inconsiderate neighbor decided to marry off his daughter on the 8th w/o checking with my schedule first, so put me down as one vote for the 9th.
Changed to the original date, the 9th. I will be out the 8th to camp.
Hey Chad… bummer, but I’m out for the 9th. Due to new plans, I’d probably even be out on the 8th so date doesn’t matter… Have fun!
I’ll be out there on March 3, 4 preriding if anyone’s interested.
Count me in. I have never ridden in the Santa Ritas before so a pre-ride would be nice. I would like to tag along with someone this weekend. I am free Sat or Sun.
I’m in for one lap.
I’ll be pre-riding on the 2nd at 10am to see what I’m biting off for a first event…should be fun.
Mike and Martin from M&M Cycling will be there for one lap, make sure there is oxygen out on the course.
See ya.
Count me in…….I will be there for 1 lap
Plan on driving down from Phoenix on Saturday to race on Sunday. Anyone interested in carpooling?
Put me down for 1 lap as well.
Thanks Chad
I plan on camping with Max and the gang on Saturday day/night, everyone is welcome to join us!
I’ll be camping with the family ( and Sprocket the trail dog)from friday night till monday.Since I’ve been fighting a cold for going on 4 weeks, I’ll be only doin one FUN lap.So lets get some others to camp/ride/hike/drink all weekend.
See Ya,
Max
Chad,
I know there use to be a link to download the waiver. Are you going to have them available at the venue? I imagine you want them signed prior to the start of the event. thanks
Will be coming out on Saturday for Sunday race. One lap, might also bring a friend, an SSer from Massachusetts.
Looks like I will be unable to make this one. I have to work all day Saturday, and with a lot going on right now couldnt make it down on Saturday night.
I might possibly pre ride the Gardner Canyon MBAA course later in the day so I may see some people out there.
Kevin
I’m in for one lap.
Bill
I would like to officialy register for one lap. Please be gentle…
I’m in for a single lap.
