3 Coconino Dirty Century
October 26, 2007 by rockyroad5050
When: May 24th 2008
Where: Safeway on Milton Ave/Plaza
What time: 6:00 am
What: A 100+ mile endurance mountain bike race/ride that will connect singletrack and dirt roads between Flagstaff and Sedona, and continue on to Mormon Lake and the Arizona Trail.
Route Description:
Milton Road-Schnebly Hill Rd/179
We will be rolling out at 6:00am down Milton Avenue in a neutral start. Once we hit the Flagstaff Urban Trail just east of the Wal-mart, people can begin to ride on ahead. For the first few miles, we will be following the urban trail past until we get to 89A. Follow the signs until you hit your first paved road, take a left, then immediate right as the road begins to turn toward 89A. Once you exit the picnic area, the next road is 89A, 3.4 miles from the start of the Urban Trail. Turn right on the bike lane and head down until a green sign to Old Munds Highway. A few miles later, go right on Mountainaire Road, then left on FS 700. 20 miles into the ride, you will turn right on FS 133-A which is signed as Little Horse Park, then right on FS 240 and ride on into Munds Park. Water and food available here. Take the highway, I-17 to Schnebly, heading west toward Sedona on this well marked forest road.
Eventually you will begin to descend Schnebly and start to see views of the red rock in Sedona. Upon reaching the signed Schnebly Vista Point, turn left onto Hot Loop Trail. The trail tends to veer off to the right to overlooks, continue left until you reach the small microwave tower. Turn right down this double track that will lead you over the ridge and down to singletrack. The singletrack will cross the road, where you will see a signed Munds Wagon TR #1 about 100 feet down/south the road. We will continue to stay on Munds and cross the road several times, simply look for the signs. At “Dangerous Slickrock” sign, continue on the “dangerous” slickrock.
When you reach the Huckabee Parking Lot, take the road out to the paved road and head right down to Sedona and Highway 179. You can either turn around at the bridge and begin to ride back up the road or resupply first by heading right on 179 over the Oak Creek Bridge. Water and food available here.
179-Arizona Trail at Mormon Lake
Ride the road all the way back to the highway, only this time continue on to FR 260. A few miles down, take a left at 262C, then a right on 262F. Stay right of both ponds that you pass, heading north most of the time. Right on FR 240. Stay on 240, ignoring the Mountaineer sign. Continue to follow the Mormon Lake signs until you reach a paved road, turn left on the paved road until the “T.” Turn left on this road and ride for about 3 miles to Ashurst Lake, then left at Horse Lake Trailhead/Arizona Trail. We will be taking the Arizona Trail to Marshall Lake, then Fisher Point, and finally the Urban Trail. All are very well signed with a brown AZT sign.
The Urban Trail
The Urban Trail begins as you pass under I-40, make sure to take the dirt urban trail here instead of descending the pavement. You will pass a small culvert and switch to the other side of the creek, there is an exit up here, the first and only “singletrack” with stairs. A small park should start to come into view as you make your way out of the urban trail system. Turn right toward the stoplight on Lone Tree, left on Butler, right on San Francisco toward downtown and the Flagstaff Brewery. Begin to drink beer immediately for best recovery.

How much is this race? Where can I find more info?
Jeff,
Thanks for posting a comment. Info about each race can be found on the home page. We are still working on this race, but in the next few months we hope to have the GPX track and cue sheet/route description.
I hope that I can make this one. Just friggin awesome Chad. I’ll be staying at the DuDeau if I’m lucky to be there…
I’m definitely in! Looking forward to hearing what the total elevation gain will be.
Sounds like another great loop. I’d like to be apart of this one as well if accepted!
Accepted? Anyone can come
Count me in!!!
Hey, I’m confused. Some posts say anyone can join this but the description is saying its limited to 74 riders. A friend and I want in, but don’t want to take spots from any regulars. We’d be cool with just getting the cue sheets and rolling on our own, maybe even a different weekend. What’s the official (or un-official) deal?
Count me in for this one. Sounds like a blast.
Hey where can I find some more info on this race? Is there a fee? Is it sanctioned? Are we getting jerseys? Hotels? What’s the deal? Someone email me back at jonmoore70@hotmail.com with some info. Thanks, Jon.
There are no shirts, fees, jerseys, or hotels…. this is just a big group ride labeled as a race. We meet and do the long ride, suffering along the way, then have some great beer afterwards
Hope to see you out there!
I’ll be there.
Big johnny,
As far as I know, this is the only 100ish mile race that is currently offered in AZ, although not the first, it is currently the only (besides the Rock y Road 50/50). Changed it to read “only”
Hope to see you there….
Cool man, I got ya. I’d like to do it with ya’ll, but some friends are getting married on the same day. And I’m planning on crashing their reception whether they invite me or not!
I’ll be there, please. Thanks for organizing this. Looks like fun!
Sounds like a good time. Count me in.
count me in
I’m in.. Mike Thiele as well
I’m in…Wahoo!!!
Please add two more riders - we’ll be just recovering from the 12 hour race in Cortez Colorado.
Thanks!
I’m in!
Any word on when cue sheets will be available?
Brian,
I am hoping to get the solidifying cue sheets about 2 weeks before race date. If you want to send me an email, I can send you what I have now for the route description.
My husband Chris and I are in. (Chris Kunstadt and Karen Ortiz). We are coming from Santa Fe and don’t know the area, so I hope it isn’t too challenging to navigate. Looking forward to it!
Karen
D. Herbold is in.

Save me a spot. I’m in!
I’m in…and now I’m out…and now I’m back in again!!!
Seriously, I’m looking forward to the Rockyrocky5050 - at least the first half!
Looks like the 12 Horas Salvando Vidas in San Carlos will have to go on without Team Gavacho this year. The Coyotes will be happy to hear that, unless there were counting on exacting their midnight revenge.
That means I’m likely in for the Coconino Dirty Sanchez. Two bits of friendly advice: don’t do drugs and BRING MY STICKERS!
Jeff
I am down….ouch.
The forecast calls for pain…
IN
All my ducks are in a row, I am in.
Just a note on FS 133: it is labled FS 133 on Forest Service Map, but the sign on the ground says 133-A. It is the same road. And you will see the ‘Little Horse Park’ sign as well.
Also, where exactly is the morning start up point? There are several potential “Plaza’s” along Milton.
Thanks Andy, changes made.
We will be meeting at the Safeway, with a few of us parking at Target across the street and going to get some coffee first. Neutral start leaves at 6 am. The “hammer” can be dropped after we hit the urban trail.
Although there are no prizes, a handful of people might be walking home with some nutrition and other goodies.
